Review: Google Podcasts

I am heartbroken that Google is killing another tool. I have been using Google Podcasts for years. I’m honestly probably not the most adroit podcast listener. I listen to my podcasts that I like and that’s about it. I have enough in my feed these days I rarely hit the end of the queue (thank you Lawfare and Myths & Legends).

I really care about three things in a podcast app:

  1. It plays on Android Auto
  2. I can find the podcasts I want to listen to
  3. My queue works intelligently across devices

Sawbones isn’t on YouTube/YouTube music. Or if it is, I can’t find it – so Google your attempt to combine your tools fails because one of my favorite podcasts just isn’t there. Not acceptable.

Oh and I can’t make a simple podcast queue – I can make a playlist, but I will have to remove things constantly because, unlike music, I don’t necessarily want to re-listen to my podcasts. Like, Lawfare is very “current events” stuff…. once I stop listening to the episode on the “Trump Trials and Tribulations” for this week, I want it to fall off the list. YouTube music/YouTube doesn’t work this way.

So I have downloaded Pocket Casts to try out of the next few weeks. I considered Amazon’s podcast app, but being that (like YouTube music) it’s tied into Amazon Music I rolled my eyes and walked away without even trying it. If PC fails I might try Spotify.

I am very sad I’m losing the tool I’ve been using for several years without problems.
