I found this on the front page of Royal Road and enjoyed it so much I went and bought it on Amazon – I’m a big fan of supporting authors. It has flaws, and I would definitely not recommend this for everyone, but I found it like book-candy. Not award winning, but yummy and bad for me.
What happens when people get super powers? Apocolypse. What happens after? People try to survive. What I really like is that super powers aren’t really random. They are induced. There is a cost to every power. A price to pay if you reach for too much. There are people who used their power for good, and a lot of people used it for selfish or greedy or just lazy purposes.
The main character, Ryan, is insane. I don’t use that word lightly. He has lived – and died – too much and his mental state has suffered as a result. He’s looking for his childhood best friend to try to rediscover his own emotions. Honestly, without spoilers – his arch is part of what I love in this book/series. He seems like a psychopath, but as you delve into his history and his experience. As you experience the loops with him, you understand his disconnect. Some of his madness comes out as an inevitable mental defense to his own power.
Monaco has to be one of my favorite parts of the book. Again, without spoilers I’m going to try to stay vague – but seriously, it is such a vital moment in Ryan’s history and in his character. The entire mini-story within the novel made me go, “ooooooh.” It forgave a multitude of sins throughout the rest of the book(s). I use the semi-plural because I originally read on Royal Road and only later bought them on amazon (and then audible – seriously, I enjoyed this!).
The world gets more complex throughout the novel, and though 90% takes place in “New Rome,” I felt like I had some visibility into the rest of the planet through this lens. It’s a microcosm to the larger picture. I highly recommend trying it on Royal Road and once you get hooked – go ahead and pick up them up.
